Xenakis at 100
Flotation Device celebrates the 100th birthday of Iannis Xenakis, one of the most extraordinary of 20th century composers. We contemplate his impact on sonorism, on electronic and percussion music, and on drone, noise, and dark ambient music—everything from Ligeti to Radigue, Japanoise and Lou Reed. We’re helped by new offerings from Steve Layton, Christopher Fox, Gordon Grdina and Márton Illés. And we observe how Xenakis's early masterpieces used Varèse as their starting point, whereas his later music increasingly resembled that of his teacher Messiaen. This leads us into a preview of Morlot and Seattle Symphony’s upcoming traversal of Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles, with which we close the evening.
