Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell. Seattle’s finest and longest-running radio program devoted to the musical avant-garde.
Commemorations
Flotation Device celebrates some notable composer birthdays: Rolf Riehm (85), Du Yun (45), Philippe Manoury (70) and George Walker (100, moved up a week in honor of Juneteenth). We enlist Du Yun’s help in exploring the esoteric world of operas whose central character is a cockroach. And we examine some key works by Pierre Henry and the Ecuadorian composer Mesías Maiguashca (the subject of a new retrospective from Buh Records). We’ve also got new recordings by Daniel Carter and Telepathic Band, Wadada Leo Smith, Ukraine’s Edward Sol, Dorothee Eberhardt, César Camarero, and the quartet of Kyoko Kitamura, Taylor Ho Bynum, Tomeka Reid, Joe Morris—plus a post-birthday instrumental gem featuring Laurie Anderson with Fred Frith.
