Music

With Michael Schell

Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell. Seattle’s finest and longest-running radio program devoted to the musical avant-garde.

Steve Reich

Steve Reich takes center stage with his newest recorded work, inspired by visual artist Gerhard Richter. Hear the whole thing, contemplate its position within the Reich oeuvre, and compare his brand of minimalism to the loopy, glitchy sound world of Carl Stone and the disorienting heterostasis of Bryn Harrison as represented by new recordings from those composers. We also return to Wadada Leo Smith’s new box set featuring trumpet/drum duets, and to Lisa Moore’s new Rzewski album for the premiere recording of a very late work composed specifically for her. Our 50 years ago in the avant-garde feature looks back on an extraordinary Miles Davis album recorded in July 1972, and we hear Bitches Brew alum Bennie Maupin paying homage to Yusef Lateef in collaboration with his longtime percussionist Adam Rudolph. Some stuttery electroacoustic works by Weston Olencki (featuring Anna Webber) and Michael Bonaventure round out the playlist.
