In this edition of Flotation Device, we give the OGs their due, with a farewell to Pharoah Sanders that looks back on his Sun Ra and Coltrane-guided apprenticeship, thence to his later exploration of cross-cultural spiritual jazz. We revisit Stockhausen’s long-neglected Carré (for four orchestras and choirs) with a complete airing of its first digital recording from Coviello Classics. We gatecrash Miles Davis as he debuts his 1972 touring band at Lincoln Center, bringing the avant-funk studio complexities of On The Corner to the stage. And we let Alvin Curran and Valentin Silvestrov remind us of the fragility of memory and civilization with gripping and obsessive music from their new albums on Black Truffle and ECM. There are youngster perspectives too: Andrew McIntosh, Yarn/Wire, Nick Didkovsky, Logan Perry, Pablo Ribot, Lucas Niggli and hurdy-gurdyist Matthias Loibner are on hand with new ideas, making this a show you definitely don’t want to miss!
