Music

With Michael Schell

Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell. Seattle’s finest and longest-running radio program devoted to the musical avant-garde.

Minimalism and anarchy

Minimalism meets anarchy as Flotation Device honors groundbreaking works by two American mavericks, both premiered in November 1973.

In John Cage’s Etcetera, performers must choose between austere independence and comfortable conformism, a metaphor for the composer's Thoreau-inspired philosophical anarchism. In Meredith Monk’s Education of the Girlchild, the composer portrays an old woman reliving her life in reverse order. It's a landmark of minimalist, female-centric opera. We also check in with Cecil Taylor's decidedly anti-minimalist quartet as it perform contemporaneously at New York's Town Hall, delivering an acoustic barrage that’s even more relentless than Miles Davis’s heavily-amplified electric band, heard that same week in Belgrade.

Moving to the present day, we marvel at the return of Davis’s saxophonist Dave Liebman to the sphere of free improvisation in his old age, while celebrating the youth movement with our first peek at Kate Gentile’s new box set, filled with cyclic structures and off-kilter Braxtonian rhythms. The other, junior, Braxton contributes a lively piece for Third Coast Percussion that finds an echo in Norm Chambers’ sampled marimbas, conveyed through a just-released collection of unreleased fixed-media pieces by that late Northwest electronicist. Lao Dan improvises on a dizi, while Mamer uses a Central Asian sherter. Allochtone jams in a junkyard, while Fred Frith joins Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles for an experiment in hybrid composition. Gerald Barry mashes Taylor and Mozart together, while an evening-closing set of chill music showcases the late Robert Black playing John Luther Adams and the premiere recording of the late Jóhann Jóhannsson’s massive and Takemitsu-inflected orchestral work A Prayer to the Dynamo.
