Today, we spend the hour with Walter Johnson, Harvard University History Professor discussing his new book, "River of Darkness: Slavery and Empire in the Cotton Kingdom." Topics cover slavery days to the start of the Civil War and the interrelationship between slavery and the building of empire on both sides of the Atlantic, the expansionist vision of the slave holding class, the remaking of Mississippi from forested lands to cotton plantations, the centrality of slavery to capitalism and the global economy, jails for slaves and the continuing of today's mass incarceration.
